NAGARHOLE NATIONAL PARK
NAGARHOLE NATIONAL PARK
Nagarhole National Park, also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park is a beautiful national park situated at the foothills of the Western Ghats, extending towards Kerala. It is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The park is bordered by Kabini River in the north and Bandipur National Park in the south. The Nagarhole River runs along the eastern boundary of the park. The Park was once a hunting ground of the Mysore rulers of the Wodeyar Dynasty.
The terrain of the National Park consists of low laying valleys interrupted with moist swamps. This kind of topography is favourable for the growth of deciduous trees interspersed with abundant growth of grass throughout the year. In the southern part of the park teak and rosewood are the predominant trees. In the eastern part dry deciduous trees like Pala Indigo are found.
The National Park is famous all over the world for wild elephant and Bison. Apart from these animals, the park is a safe haven for Tiger, Leopard, Dhole, Sambar etc., The tourists can see crocodiles basking lazily along the banks of the Kabini River. Smooth Coated otters are often spotted peeking from the muddy surface of lakes here.
The Nagarhole National Park is also considered as an important reserve for birdlife. Over 270 species of birds are recorded here, amongst which most of them have been saved from the brink of extinction. The Oriental white backed Vulture and the Malabar Grey Hill are few of many endangered species that roam freely here. In winter Ospreys are a common sight for tourists. Thus, Nagarhole National Park leaves an unforgettable impression to its visitors, with its wide range of flora and fauna.
