The Indian Big 5 Safari

The Indian Big 5 Safari continues to be an unmatched wildlife safari experience showcasing the best that India’s wildlife has to offer

Indian Big 5 Safari

Wondering what the Indian Big 5 safari means? The ‘Big 5’ was a term widely used to describe those mammals that were difficult to capture on foot in the African savannah’s. Wondering what the Indian ‘Big 5’ safari means? The ‘Big 5’ animals of the African continent are – African Elephant, African Rhino, Cape Buffalo, African Leopard and the African Lion. It was primarily used as a marketing tool to promote the safaris of Africa, and is widely used by tourists and wildlife guides to experience these animals. India’s wilderness which has the richest mega diversity of species in the world,  has over 1100 avian birds and more than 400 mammal species. But it is the ‘Tiger’ the grabs the highest media attention, thus making it a great revenue generator to the Indian tourism sector. However, we would like to take this opportunity to showcase the Indian ‘Big 5’ – Royal Bengal Tiger, Asiatic Elephant, Asiatic Lion, Indian Leopard, and the One-horned Rhinoceros. We would also love to include the Asian Wild Buffalo, Sloth Bear, and the Blackbuck if the list needs some expansion.

This wildlife enthusiast focussed – the Indian Big 5 safari has been specially crafted to offer tourists varied and vibrant shades of different geographical parts of the country. The tour begins from the western part of India and makes its way to the heart of the country taking you to its eastern corner. The journey begins with a short stay at Velavadar from whereon you proceed to the much famed Sasan Gir, the only natural home of Asiatic Lions in the whole world. After exploring Gir for a couple of days, you move on to Kanha National Park nestled in Madhya Pradesh state which is the central part of India. Kanha is one of the most famous Tiger Reserves of the country. Progressing further, the next destination is Kaziranga National Park in Assam. This sanctuary is known for being the habitation of two thirds of world’s total population on the one-horned rhino, a rare mammal.

This morning, after a complimentary breakfast at the hotel, proceed to Mumbai airport to board the flight to Nagpur. Head for Kanha National Park immediately upon arrival at Nagpur Airport.

Kanha National Park will serve as your base for two more days coming up during your Tiger Safari.

We suggest going for both the jungle safaris on each day of your stay here as a visit to jungle at both times of the day has its own charm.

Kanha National Park is among the best Tiger reserves in India. Much fame has been accorded to this sanctuary due to its reference in Rudyard Kipling’s bestselling fiction- The Jungle Book. Bamni Dadar also known as the sunset point is a popular spot inside the sanctuary to enjoy stunning views of the sunset. Apart from the freely wandering royal Bengal Tigers, other wild animals that can be spotted here include Sambhar, Gaur, Indian Leopards, Bara Singha and abundant birds as well as reptiles.

The Indian state of Madhya Pradesh has a plethora of wildlife sanctuaries and national reserves. Pench National Park is an important one among these and a popular spot in India for the Indian Big 5 safari. Spread over a geographical area of 758 sq. km., the reserve is most known for serving as the setting for Rudyard Kipling’s ‘The Jungle Book’. The present inhabitation of flora and fauna in this forest is as glorious as that used to be in the past. Apart from the Tigers, you can catch glimpses of Leopards, Wolf, Wild Dogs, Sambar, Cheetal, Chousingha and around 285 species of birds.

On the next day’s evening, drive to Nagpur for your flight to Kolkata. Arrangements for your arrival and check-in assistance at Kolkata have already been made.

Enjoy your complimentary breakfast at the hotel and depart to the airport for your onward flight to Guwahati. From there on, travel by road to Kaziranga National Park where you will be spending the next three nights of your Indian Big 5 Safari.

We recommend the maximum number of jungle safaris on each day to make the most out of your wildlife vacation to India (01 Elephant safari in the morning & 01 Jeep Safari in the afternoon). Take a 45 minutes elephant safari early in the morning and return to the lodge for breakfast after which at noon again head towards the verdant jungles for an open jeep safari. The best way to see Kaziranga National Park according to our recommendation would be using the Elephant safari.

Kaziranga National Park is the most known for being the abode of two-thirds of the entire world’s population of one-horned rhinos. Tigers are another attraction of this sanctuary. Apart from these, you can also find Wild Asiatic Water Buffalos, Swamp Deer, Leopards, Hispid Hare, Capped and Golden Langurs. Visit the Kaziranga National Park official site for more details.
